ICMR Worskhsop on Design and Synthesis of New Materials

DATES: August 1 - August 2, 2008
LOCATION: University of California, Santa Barbara CA 93106 USA

The International Center for Materials Research (ICMR) is pleased to announce a two-day workshop on Design and Synthesis of New Materials from August 1 to August 2, 2008. The workshop will take place on the UCSB campus. The workshop is associated with a two-week ICMR Summer School being run by Mike O'Keeffe and Davide Proserpio on Periodic Structures and Crystal Chemistry.

The goal of the workshop is to bring together key researchers who work in the areas of targeted synthesis, high-throughput synthesis (mostly chemists), and in structure enumeration and prediction (mostly mathematicians, theoretical physicists and chemists). The intent is that the two groups, who usually work in isolation of each other, can learn from the interaction, and hopefully this will stimulate collaborations that will lead to breakthroughs in the Rational Design of Materials.

It is clear that to accelerate progress in the Rational Design of Materials a closer link between mathematicians, modelers and synthetic chemists is needed. This workshop is intended to strengthen such links.

Topics covered in the workshop will include:

  • Geometrical relationships of synthesis mixtures
  • Mathematical description of porous materials and networks
  • Relationships between topology and structure properties
  • Creation of databases of nets and structures
  • Structure optimization - navigation of energy landscapes
  • Prediction of properties

Materials systems of interest include (but are not limited to):

  • Zeolites
  • Mixed valence oxides
  • Clays
  • Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs)
  • Zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs)
  • Mesoporous crystals and gels

Important information regarding the workshop:

Accommodations:

Accommodations have been reserved at the Best Western South Coast Inn. Once you arrive at the Santa Barbara Airport or the Goleta Airbus Stop, you can contact the BWSCI (805-967-3200) using the courtesy phone that is provided at the stations. The BWSCI has a shuttle and will provide transportation from either location to the hotel.

Location:

The workshop will be held at the Materials Research Lab Building in Room 2053.

Transportation:

Transportation will be provided to/from the BWSCI and UCSB each day. The Shuttle will depart at 7:50 AM. If you miss the shuttle, the BWSCI has a shuttle service to/from UCSB. You can request the shuttle by contacting the front desk. Transportation from UCSB to the BWSCI will be provided at conclusion of each day.
