ICMR Worskhsop on Design and Synthesis of New Materials

International Center for Materials Research Summer
DATES: August 1 - August 3, 2008
LOCATION: University of California, Santa Barbara CA 93106 USA

The International Center for Materials Research (ICMR) is pleased to announce a three day workshop on Design and Synthesis of New Materials from August 1 to August 3, 2008. The workshop will take place on the UCSB campus. The workshop is associated with a two-week ICMR Summer School being run by Mike O'Keeffe and Davide Preserpio on Periodic Structures and Crystal Chemistry.

The goal of the workshop is to bring together key researchers who work in the areas of targeted synthesis, high-throughput synthesis (mostly chemists), and in structure enumeration and prediction (mostly mathematicians, theoretical physicists and chemists). The intent is that the two groups, who usually work in isolation of each other, can learn from the interaction, and hopefully this will stimulate collaborations that will lead to breakthroughs in the Rational Design of Materials.

It is clear that to accelerate progress in the Rational Design of Materials a closer link between mathematicians, modelers and synthetic chemists is needed. This workshop is intended to strengthen such links.

Topics covered in the workshop will include:
Geometrical relationships of synthesis mixtures
Mathematical description of porous materials and networks
Relationships between topology and structure properties
Creation of databases of nets
Structure optimization - navigation of energy landscapes
Prediction of properties

Materials systems of interest include (but are not limited to);
Zeolites
Mixed valence oxides
Clays
Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs)
Zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs)
Mesoporous crystals and gels
