One of the key challenges facing materials researchers in the developing world is the lack of access to good instrumentation. The International Center for Materials Research (ICMR) has taken a proactive stance in relation to this problem by launching the Asia Materials Network at a meeting at the Institute of Materials Research and Engineering (IMRE) in Singapore, November 14-16, 2005.
The meeting, which comprised a series of lectures and discussions, brought together about 40 scientists from 19 different countries. The goal of the Network is to enhance international collaboration throughout the region by offering access to facilities at over 10 centers. The centers that have agreed to make their facilities available at no cost to visiting researchers from within the region. The list of host institutions is incomplete at this stage and we would welcome participation by additional centers. It is expected, of course, that many institutions will participate as both hosts and users of the Network.
